Pierre Gaultier de Verennes founded Fort Saint Charles in 1732. He was the first native-born Canadian to penetrate the unknown lands west of the Great Lakes and his discoveries have deservedly earned for him the title of "Pathfinder of the West."

His son, the ironically named Jean-Baptiste La Verendrye, was beheaded by the Sioux in 1736.
